Photo: Ashley de Prazer. Dancer: Rhiannon SpratlingThe Australian Dance Awards will be presented on Saturday 1 September, in the Heath Ledger Theatre, the main venue of Western Australia’s recently opened State Theatre Centre.
The Australian Dance Awards will be the signature event of MoveMe—a week-long celebration of dance within the Perth Cultural Centre precinct. Highlights include the Australian Premiere of Faun choreographed by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, featuring internationally acclaimed West Australian dance artist James O’Hara, and Harakiri choreographed by Didier Théron (France) showcasing six of Western Australia’s finest dance artists. In the outdoor areas of the Perth Cultural Centre we will see Western Australia’s largest ever community dance event with over 200 participants.
The festival will also include a choreographic lab for regional artists, a panel discussion and workshop based on Jonathan Burrow's A Choreographers Handbook and the premiere of a new work by West Australian choreographer Alice Holland called Tiny Little Tragedies.
Chair of the Australian Dance Award Committee, Robina Beard OAM, says she is thrilled that the Australian Dance Awards is making its mark all around Australia.
After wonderful presentations in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane this year, and now Perth in 2012, the Awards truly are the Australian dance awards. Western Australia has always produced incredible dance and dancers and it is exciting that the dance profession will gather in 2012 for the presentations.
The Australian Dance Awards recognise and honour professional Australian dance artists who have made an outstanding contribution to Australian dance.
