2009 Australian Youth Dance Festival

Ausdance WA will host the 2009 Australian Youth Dance Festival (AYDF) from Sunday 12 April – Sunday 19 April, 2009, in Mandurah, Western Australia.

Note: Some of the following information may change as we work on making this the best possible festival. If you have any questions email Claudia Alessi at Ausdance WA.

What will this festival be like?

The event attracts young dancers (15 – 19 yrs), generally attending with a school or community group, from across the country to participate in a week of forums, workshops, choreographic activities and performances with leading Australian professional dance artists.

The AYDF is much more than a 'summer school'. It is unique in its structure, and the way in which it allows young people to engage in creative exchange with professional dancers and choreographers, and their peers.

The AYDF takes place in a supportive, non-competitive environment that encourages learning.

Where is the festival?

Mandurah is a regional centre 74 kms south of Perth. Mandurah is easily accessible from Perth by public transport, with the new train link from the Perth city centre.

The AYDF will be centred around the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre, a beautiful theatre complex with estuary views.

When does the festival start?

The Festival Program will commence on Monday 13 April and conclude Saturday evening 18 April. Groups need to arrive by Sunday 12 April for Festival registration and depart the Festival Sunday 19 April.

What dance experience do I need?

You need to be aged 15 – 19 years. (Turning 15 in 2009 is OK). You need to have dance experience. The Festival is not designed for beginners or very new dancers. The week is intensive and participants need to be able to cope with and complete all aspects of the program.

It is expected that dance teachers/group leaders will ensure that only young people who meet these criteria are registered.

How much does it cost?

  1. Registration fee

The Registration fee for youth participants is $220 (includes GST).

  2. Meals

    • We are planning a festival dinner on the Monday night and there may also be a closing night event—cost tbc.
    • Lunches will be organised and provided for those who want to go this way—cost tbc.
    • Breakfast and other evening meals will be each group’s responsibility (Festival accommodation is self contained—so you can prepare food there).
  3. Transport

There will be a cost associated with transport between Perth airport and Mandurah. Public transport is available between Perth and Mandurah, but it may be easier to charter buses. This is still to be confirmed.

  4. Other costs

    Tickets for evening/film performance program: $20 – $30.

There may be an associated professional development program for teachers alongside the youth program. This may incur a cost.

Weather

The weather is generally good at this time of year (even for swimming)—but of course no guarantees! For more information visit the Mandurah Visitor Centre website
