Key information

The Australian Dance Awards land in Adelaide for the first time in their history, and the dancers of Adelaide are getting excited about having this night-of-nights for professional dance in their midst. We've booked their favourite theatre, Her Majesty’s, for Saturday 12 September and the red carpet is being readied for a fabulous parade of Australian dancers, dance companies, choreographers and dance students.

For the past year, Ausdance has collected nominations for 12 different categories of dance. There are Awards for dance companies, choreography, dance education, community dance and more—eleven categories in total. That’s not to forget the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award, and the special Hall of Fame Award, both presented by the Australian Dance Awards national selection panel.

One of the challenges that go with taking the Australian Dance Awards to South Australia is exploring dance in that state. There is no shortage of professional dance, and South Australia has a long and honourable history of dance companies and dancers including the notable Sir Robert Helpmann. And dance in South Australia would not be what it is today without Australian Dance Theatre, celebrating its 50th birthday this year. The Australian Dance Awards will incorporate a special celebration of this proud achievement, with excerpts of ADT's dance works and appearances by the first artistic director Elizabeth Cameron Dalman. And this year's Awards poster image celebrates the generations of dance and dancers represented by this 50th birthday.

ADT will be accompanied on stage by performances from Dance North, Restless Dance Theatre, a new Leigh Warren work with dancers from the Adelaide College of Performing Arts, and some surprises that will delight the audience. And every Award will be presented by guests from across Australia, especially South Australia, as Ausdance presents the Australian Dance Awards for the first time in Adelaide.
